Government, enterprise and environmental NGO boost energy conservation and emissions reduction
Beijing, June 28, 2010 – At the recently held 2010 Beijing International Energy Saving and Environmental Protection Exhibition, a high-level training program on energy efficiency management was jointly launched by the Beijing Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Center (BEEC), WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and ABB, the leading power and automation technology group. The cooperation will help enterprises enhance their strengths in energy efficiency technology application and management to bolster low carbon development.
The program, named “Low Carbon Management Skills and Technology Applications for Enterprises“, will provide systematic energy efficiency training in various forms, including surveys, tutorial classes, case studies, consultancy, and onsite diagnosis, to enterprises nationwide..
In the first training session, planned for this August, experts from government, research institutions, industry organizations and corporations will deliver systematic instruction to the responsible executives, covering topics such as government regulations, industry trends, energy efficiency management, and the application of energy efficiency products and technology.
The course is recognized as part of the Continuing Professional Education program, and every qualified participant, including both corporate managers and engineers, will receive a certification issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, officially acknowledging their successful completion of the program.
Year of 2010 is a decisive year for China in the “11th Five-year Development Plan,” both in achieving the previously announced energy conservation and emissions reduction targets and setting new targets for the coming five years.
Claudio Facchin, Chairman and President of ABB China, said, “China is faced with heavy pressure from energy conservation and emissions reduction. Industries account for 70% of total energy consumption in the country, and should do their utmost in this regard. The cooperation among our 3 parties focuses on how Chinese enterprises can choose the best methods to achieve the most efficient energy conservation results, while optimizing environmental investment and costs.”
According to the latest statistics from ABB China, out of the comprehensive power and automation offerings, ABB low voltage drives alone have helped Chinese customers save 50 billion kWh in the past 15 years, enough to meet the electrical needs of all the Beijing citizens for more than 10 years, and reducing CO2 emissions by about 50 million tons.
Energy conservation and emissions reduction is a systematic social program and requires the support and effort of all relevant parties. ABB has always attached great importance to cooperation with government bodies in conducting energy efficiency training among industrial enterprises. ABB entered into a strategic partnership with Guangdong Province as early as 2006, and has so far delivered energy efficiency training in 6 Guangdong cities to more than 1000 enterprises. At the end of 2009, ABB signed a 3-year strategic framework agreement with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) addressing energy efficiency. The two parties work closely to organize energy efficiency seminars, technology trainings, and consultancies to help enterprises achieve systematic energy conservation and emissions reduction.
Facts & Figures
Energy efficiency is one of ABB’s core businesses. ABB spends over 50% of its total R&D investment on energy efficiency technologies and products. The company offers comprehensive energy efficiency technology at each step of the energy value chain from primary energy development and transportation, electricity generation, transmission and distribution to industrial processes and end-user, helping reduce the overall 80% energy loss by 20-30%.
In China, ABB’s energy efficiency technology has been extensively adopted in the power, utilities and industrial sectors. ABB M3BP motors have obtained the National Energy Conservation Product Certification. These high performance motors have been installed in the Paper Machine Driving System of Anhui Shanying Paper Industry Company, helping save 1.5 million kWh of electricity and cut 1,000 tons of CO2 emission annually. ABB’s ASC5000 medium-voltage drive enabled the Chongqing Luohuang Power Plant to reduce power consumption by over 30%. The ABB i-bus® intelligent building systems deployed at the Terminal 3 of Beijing Airport and Line 9 of Light Rail project in Tianjin helped decrease electricity consumption by over 20%.
Other projects include the Xiangjiaba (Sichuan)-Shanghai ±800kV HVDC transmission line, which improved transmission efficiency to over 93%. Energy saved would enable power supply for an additional 1 million people in China every year. For the Heshuyuan power plant project in Meizhou, Guangdong, ABB offered a complete distributed control system (DCS), cutting the plants annual SO2 emissions by 90% and saving 10,000 tons of SO2 emissions per year. The project won the 2009 Best Environmental Performance Award presented by “Asia Power” magazine.
At 2010 Beijing International Energy Savings and Environmental Protection Exhibition, ABB showcased a number of its leading energy efficiency products and solutions, including high performance motors, drives, the Extended Automation System 800xA, the ABB Green Rubber Tyre Gantry System, and MNS iS Integrated Motor Control Switchgears.
