ABB commits smart technologies to Chongqing’s industrial upgrade

ABB inaugurated a new robotics application center at the Liangjiang New District of Chongqing Municipality on May 17. The establishment of the center signifies a further push from ABB to support the development of the robotics industry in China’s western regions, step up smart manufacturing and drive industrial upgrade.

ABB is a global robotics leader and one of the earliest companies to locally execute R&D and production in China. The Chongqing center, after Shanghai, Zhuhai and Qingdao, aims to integrate resources in Southwest China by providing robots, application, system integration and related customer service. Meeting fast-growing demands for industrial robots from automotive, 3C electronics, equipment and customer goods manufacturing, the new establishment is expected to help customers raise the flexibility, efficiency, safety and reliability of production, important means of building up a connected, collaborative future factory.

Chongqing is now strongly pushing the upgrade toward automatic, digital and intelligent equipment at traditional enterprises. Among China’s first batch of cities to have industrial cloud innovation on trial, as well as the integration of the Internet and the industrial sector, Chongqing is actively speeding up the integration of manufacturing and the Internet. Smart technologies, represented by industrial robots, are an important base for the upgrade of manufacturing, a necessary tool for Chongqing to tap in new growth mode under current economic circumstances.

Representatives from Liangjiang District attended the ceremony. Founded in 2012, the district voiced a clear thought to make local orders stimulate the industries and use an industrial ecosystem to congregate enterprises. Now at the robotics park, an industrial ecosystem of robotics is being formed. Next, the district will prioritize the development of industrial robots, which will then pave the way for service robotics. The outcome would be realizing the production of reducer, controller and motor, making a vertical integration of robotic body and key components. In the meantime, based on cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence and supercomputing, the service robotics sector is expected to boost.

James Li, Head of Robotics and Motion Division, ABB China, thanked the municipal and district governments for the support. He said, “Chongqing, as China’s key metropolis and modern manufacturing base, makes an important spot in China’s economic map, especially in terms of manufacturing. For ABB, Chongqing and its radiated areas are important markets for robotics application. We expect the new center to better serve the Western market and customers as they are upgrading the manufacturing sector to raise global competence.”

As participant, witness and beneficiary of China’s 40 years’ reform and open-up, ABB has been closely following the national strategies, making relentless efforts regarding investments, R&D, talents. Chongqing is a key spot in West China, a window and strategic fulcrum in the China Western Development, and a significant convergence between the Belt & Road and the Yangtze Economic Zone. Over the years, ABB has placed Chongqing as its business forefront in West China, and its pioneering smart technologies have been adopted in key local projects, such as Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, Wanzhou Power Station, Nanchuan Stadium, Chang’an Ford, etc. ABB has in Chongqing established a full value chain including R&D, manufacturing, engineering, sales and service, a market-oriented existence to support the regional economic development in West China.

A year after Chongqing became a municipality, ABB in 1998 established its first subsidiary in it - ABB Chongqing Transformer Co., Ltd. Now the company has developed into ABB Group’s global manufacturing base for UHV transformers, global transformer design center, global technology innovation center, as well as Asia-Pacific regional center for insulation kits processing and large power transformer export. For 20 years, ABB transformers have been used in many national projects, including Beijing Olympics, Shanghai Expo and Guangzhou Asian Games, as well as in various ± 800kV UHVDC power transmission projects, such as Jingping – Sunan, Hami – Zhengzhou, Xiluodu – Zhejiang Jinhua, Jiuquan – Hunan, etc.

Officially opened in Chongqing in January 2006, ABB Jiangjin Turbo Systems Co., Ltd. is now ABB Group’s second largest turbocharger manufacturing base and the sole production center for small to medium-sized turbochargers for low-speed diesel engines. Based on strong local production, products and technologies regarding ABB turbo have been widely applied in ships, power stations, gen-sets, diesel locomotives and large, off-highway vehicles in China. Key projects include China’s only polar research vessel “Xue Long”, China’s largest semi-submersible vessel “Guanghuakou”, world’s largest container ship by 2014 “CSCL Globe”, the 4,400hp shunting locomotives of China Rail, as well as the super-five-star cloud computing data center of China Mobile, etc.

Chongqing has now become one of ABB’s most important R&D and production spots in China. While strengthening capabilities regarding production and scientific research, ABB has always devoted itself to providing fast and highly efficient services for the customers. In September 2013, ABB Chongqing Service Station was officially put into operation. As the first comprehensive service station ABB has ever established in Southwest China, this station will provide ABB’s full lifecycle management services, including installation and commissioning, spare parts, maintenance, repairs, upgrades and retrofits, training and consulting, to local customers from industries like power generation, metals, building & infrastructure, as well as oil, gas & petrochemical, etc.

Over the years, ABB has paid high attention to Chongqing’s development as the municipality pledges to build itself into an open highland in inland China. Since the establishment of Chongqing Mayor's International Economic Advisory Council (CMIA) in 2006, ABB has henceforth been an advisory member, offering suggestions regarding Chongqing’s social and economic development. In 2015, ABB located its largest annual event Automation World in Chongqing, the first time in West China, demonstrating the importance ABB attaches to these regions.

To better support Chongqing’s development in West China under the 13th Five-Year Plan, the Belt and Road Initiative and the Yangtze River Economic Zone, ABB signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the city. The MoU aims to boost mutual cooperation in industry, energy, transport and infrastructure. ABB is capable of assisting Chongqing in building up a smart city and upgrading its manufacturing with the ABB Ability™ digital solutions.
