Beijing, November 30, 2015 -- ABB, the world’s leading power and automation technology group, today delivered its 10 millionth variable speed drive to China’s Wuhan Guide Electric Co., Ltd., as it continues to help customers save energy, improve efficiency while lowering environmental impact. The 10 millionth drive was manufactured by ABB Beijing Drive Systems Co., Ltd.

ABB, which developed its first AC drive in the 1970s, today is capable of offering the most advanced range of variable speed drives in the world. ABB drives cover a wide power and voltage range, with voltages up to 13.8 kilovolts and power up to 100 megawatts, helping industrial, commercial and residential users save energy and improve performance. In industry, where 70% of the energy consumption comes from electric motors, drives can reduce energy use by 30%-50% by controlling the run-speed of motors, thus significantly increasing industrial energy efficiency.

The drive delivered today is an ACS880 industrial drive—part of ABB’s all-compatible drives portfolio—compatible with virtually all types of processes, motors, automation systems, users, and a wide range of applications in a broad range of industries. The innovation behind all-compatibility is ABB’s new drive architecture, designed to simplify operation, optimize energy efficiency and maximize output. The ACS880 series consists of single drives, multidrives and drive modules.

Wuhan Guide Electric, a system integrator manufacturing electric control systems for port cranes, has been a strategic partner with ABB for over a decade.

“We place great demands on suppliers, especially concerning product quality, reliability and services,” said Li Xiang, CTO of Wuhan Guide Electric. “The outstanding direct torque control (DTC) motor control technology and built-in crane control software of ABB’s industrial drives help us to maximize crane performance, and to our port customers, that means improved safety, high availability, better efficiency and lower energy costs.”

ABB has delivered millions of drives over the past 40 years, saving huge amounts of energy for customers. In China, ABB drive products had helped domestic customers save up to 243 billion kilowatt-hours of power by the end of 2014, equivalent to the annual consumption of about 500 million people, based on the average resident power consumption in China. The savings also correspond to 200 million tons of CO2 emissions—had this power been generated by fossil fuels.

ABB is a Global 500 company and a leader in power and automation technologies. They enable utility, industry, and transport and infrastructure customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in 100 countries and employs about 140,000 people. ABB has a full range of business activities in China, including R&D, manufacturing, sales and services, with 19,000 employees, 39 local companies, and an extensive sales and service network across 126 cities.
