ABB companies ranked among “China Top 100 Electric Companies”

Beijing, April 26, 2018 - ABB was recognized with multiple local companies ranking among the “China Top 100 Electric Companies”. It was announced at the 14th China Electric Industry Development Summit Forum themed “Intelligence, Interconnection, Efficiency, Safety”. ABB also won six important prestigious awards in terms of competitiveness, innovation, service, productivity and growth potential.

“On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up, we looked back at the remarkable achievements of China’s electric industry and explored the prospects of the industry at this forum. With the continuous advancement of the 'Made in China 2025' initiative, China's electric industry has entered a critical period of transformation and upgrading. Clean energy, data security, electric safety, energy interconnection, as well as the development of more reliable and quality electric products have become the main innovation areas in the current electric industry.” said Mr. Zhou Baodong, Deputy Party Secretary of the China Machinery Industry Information Institute.

As a pioneering technology leader, ABB has participated in China’s economic development since the beginning of the country’s reform and opening up. Establishing its office in Beijing in 1979, first joint venture in China in 1992, Corporate Research Center China in 2005 and Xiamen Hub, ABB has been making every effort over the years. Currently, ABB has a full range of business activities in China, including R&D, manufacturing, sales and services, with 17,000 employees and 40 local companies, becoming a participant, witness and beneficiary of the economic take-off of China.

All along, innovation has been the cornerstone for ABB to maintain the leading position and improve competitiveness in China market. Over the last year, ABB launched many innovative products, technologies and solutions such as the next-generation asset performance management (APM) solution Asset Health Center 3.0, the flexible sequential turbocharging system, the servo motors HDS series, the latest small robot IRB 1100 and the i-bus® KNX PEONIA sensor for smarter home.

Taking advantages of the frontier technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, ABB combines its deep domain expertise and unmatched experience in connectivity with leading digital technologies to continuously enrich its industry-leading solutions of ABB Ability™, the unified, cross-industry digital capability. Currently, the number of digital solutions has exceeded 210. They enable customers in utilities, industry, transport and infrastructure to know more, do more and do better, by connecting them to the IIoT, turning data into insights and then into actions, so as to improve productivity, energy efficiency and industrial competitiveness. The latest examples include:

  • ABB Ability™ smart sensor solution is applied to Baowu Steel Group, the world's second largest steel company, to upgrade the conventional motors to intelligent connected machines. The customer can remotely monitor the key performance data, identify potential risks and conduct preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and maintenance costs;
  • ABB provided Xuelong II, China’s first domestically built polar research ice breaker, with world-leading Azipod® VI propulsion system and ABB Ability™ Marine Remote Diagnostic System which offers real-time online monitoring, equipment health assessment and decision support;
  • ABB Ability™ Electrical Distribution Control System (EDCS) is an innovative cloud-computing platform designed for monitoring, optimizing and controlling electrical system. It helps Nanjing Normal University to easily conduct daily equipment management through mobile APP, realizing digital monitoring and energy management so as to improve efficiency and reduce cost;
  • ABB provided NIO House with Terra 63Z DC charging points and access to ABB Ability™ Connected Service, which can remotely diagnose 90% of possible problems and solve 60% of exceptional cases online, greatly improving the operation efficiency of the charging piles.

In addition, ABB established the Shanghai ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operation Center for Marine at the end of 2017 to enhance the operational level and competitive strength of customers’ fleets through digital connection. Meanwhile, ABB set up the ABB Ability Digital Technology Showroom at its China headquarters to comprehensively present its leading digital technologies, products, systems and solutions in such areas as future grid, intelligent manufacturing, smart city, intelligent transportation and future services.

While promoting the digital transformation, ABB also actively help customers improve energy efficiency while significantly lowering environmental impact with intelligent and efficient products and solutions. At the end of 2017, ABB provided the Huainan-Nanjing-Shanghai 1,000kV UHVAC transmission project constructed by State Grid Corporation of China with a SF6 gas-insulated metal-enclosed transmission line (GIL) solution to support the implementation of China’s Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan. By saving coal for power generation, the solution is expected to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 960,000t and nitrogen oxide emissions by 530,000t per year. Drive is another example. In the past decade, the drives that ABB offered to local customers have saved electricity of approximately 388 tWh (calculated based on a ten-year service life), equivalent to the household electricity consumption of about 620 million people for one year.
