ABB helps Tiger Forest and Paper Group improve energy efficiency

Reducing 5.6MWh of electrical power consumption and more than 2,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually by providing leading edge paper machine drive systems

Beijing, China, August 13, 2008, — ABB, a leading power and automation technology group, announced today that it will supply Yueyang Paper Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of Tiger Forest and Paper Group (Tiger Group), with leading high efficiency motors and drive systems to help customers improve productivity and significantly reduce energy consumption.

More than 60% of total energy consumed by the paper-making industry is sourced to AC motors. Thus, AC motors play a crucial part in consumption and emission reduction strategies among paper companies. ABB’s delivery of high-efficiency AC motors to Tiger Group will account for a total capacity of 24,000kW, with its efficiency 3.8% higher than ordinary AC motors. These high-efficiency AC motors could reduce power consumption by 5.6MWh (equivalent to 2,300 tons of coal consumption) and CO2 emissions by 2,000 tons on an annual basis, translating into RMB3 million in economic benefits.

Mr. Tobias Becker, head of ABB Process Automation North Asia states that, “ABB is very pleased to cooperate with Tiger Forest & Paper Group who is a leading enterprise in China’s paper industry and has a long cooperation history with ABB. ABB’s automation, electrification, and drive control solutions are famous for their efficiency, reliability, and precision. We will provide strong support for Tiger Paper Group’s goal of improving efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and achieving sustainable development.”

According to the agreement, ABB will supply the latest PMC800 AC drive systems for two paper machines and two winders. ABB’s scope includes 140 drive sections, 132 AC motors, 8 AC800M controllers and other related control devices. Besides its high-efficiency AC motors, ABB’s advanced DTC Direct Torque Control technology adopted by PMC800 drives system also has outstanding energy efficiency features. It effectively enhances control-precision of the paper machine, and reduces paper-cuts and unplanned shut-downs, improving the paper machine’s productivity and reducing maintenance cost.

These two paper machines to be supplied by Voith Paper will produce 400,000 TPY of fine paper. The two paper machines are scheduled to start up in Dec., 2009.

Tiger Forest and Paper Group is one of the largest pulp & paper producers in China. To achieve sustainable development, Tiger Group has been consistently prioritizing its energy efficiency strategy, heavily investing on leading technologies to improve productivity and reduce energy consumption over years.
