Introduction of leading technology improves product standards and drives industry development
Quality products help customers ensure power reliability
Beijing, January 17, 2011 –ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, recently celebrated the production of its 300,000th VD4 vacuum circuit breaker at its local joint venture, ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company. The VD4 vacuum circuit breaker is the No.1 bestseller in its market segment in China. Since its introduction for local production in 1993, the VD4 has set an industry benchmark for the product category, driving technology improvement and the development of the entire industry.
Fredrik Westgard, General Manager of ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company, said, “The VD4 vacuum circuit breaker is one of our key products. It has been extensively deployed in a variety of projects throughout China, helping customers gain a secure and reliable power supply with our leading technology and quality products.”
Circuit breaker is a core component in switchgear for power distribution. They promptly cut the circuit when a short circuit or other faults are detected, isolating the damaged part in order to maintain power and prevent core electrical components from taking damage. As an air-insulated circuit breaker, the VD4 is suitable for a variety of operating environments and features a compact design, ease of operation, a long service life, low maintenance requirements, and a high degree of operating safety. It complies with many leading national and global industry standards, such as GB1984, DL/T403, IEC 62271-100 and IEC 62271-1. The product maintains its technology leadership and sets benchmarks for the entire industry.
This year, the company plans to launch a new generation of VD4 vacuum circuit breakers, with the latest technology in medium voltage – PT embedded poles. The PT embedded poles are imported from Germany. The vacuum interrupters are protected by a high-tech new material instead of conventional epoxy resin, to further optimize the manufacturing process of embedded poles and to fulfill and exceed the requirements in international electrical industry standards, in mechanical, electrical, low-temperature, and environmental performance. The new product comprehensively improves the reliability and operational environment standards of the product category. With a unique functional modular operating mechanism, it features easy production, installation, and maintenance, further shortening lead-time. In addition, the highly compatible modules help to save the quantity of spare parts so as to lower inventory and improve capital efficiency. The VD4 vacuum circuit breaker with PT embedded poles is ideal for a number of applications such as power plants, substations, chemical and steel plants, automation areas, airports, shipyards and utility buildings.
The VD4 vacuum circuit breakers delivered by ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company have been widely deployed in many key projects in China. For example, the products were used in the power supply systems of the Expo Park, Expo Village, and other key projects of Shanghai World Expo. Other major infrastructure projects to feature the VD4 include the Three Gorges Project, the Qinshan Nuclear Power Station, Shanghai Baosteel, the Guangzhou Metro, and construction projects for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In addition to China, the product has also been shipped to over 40 countries and regions around the world including India, Australia, South Korea, German and Canada.
Established in September 1992, ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company is ABB's first joint venture in China. The company is committed to localization and technology introduction, and has maintained robust momentum, growing into one of the world’s largest medium voltage switchgear and circuit breaker manufacturers. ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company has ranked among China’s “Top 100 Electric Companies” since 2000 for ten consecutive years. After celebrating the 100,000th VD4 vacuum circuit breaker in 2005, it took only five years for the company to reach this latest milestone, addressing the growing demand of domestic customers for advanced products and equipment.
