ABB contributes to Qinghai-Tibet railway

Advanced technologies helps "Go West" initiative on the "Roof of the world"

Beijing, China, May 25, 2005 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, today signed an 18.1 million RMB ($ 2.2 million) contract with Qinghai Electric Power Company to supply advanced power technologies for the Qinghai-Tibet railway.

"We are excited to work on this prestigious project," said Fulvio Granata, general manager of ABB Huadian High-Voltage Switchgear Co., Ltd. "And have committed to delivering our world-class power technologies, which are of the highest quality, in addition to the absolute best after-sales service."

Under the terms of the contract, ABB will deliver seven circuit breaker bays of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), which ensure safe and reliable power supply while eliminating environmental impact.

The 1,956-kilometer Qinghai-Tibet railway, sitting on "the roof of the world," crosses numerous mountains, and is the world's highest railway in terms of altitude (4,550 meters on average). The project has been China's long cherished dream and forms part of the country's "Go West" frontier development initiative.

ABB, as a key supplier, will have to overcome challenging environmental conditions while installing the 145kV SF6 GIS in the Tuotuo River and Wudaoliang sections of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

ABB Huadian High-Voltage Switchgear Co., Ltd., located in Xiamen, is one of ABB's 20 companies in China. It has provided around 100 domestic transformer substations with high-voltage apparatus, most of which are central substations in different regions and key projects of the country.
