Increase of voltage grade greatly improves power supply capacity and reduces power loss
March 11, 2008, Beijing China---ABB, the world’s leading power and automation technology group, has succeeded in winning the tender for a Jiangsu province 20-kilovoltage grade power supply pilot project and will provide 20kV Safe series gas insulated ring main unit(RMU) for the distribution network in the Jingjiang region of Taizhou, Jiangsu province. This will be the second time ABB has participated in constructing the domestic 20kV power supply project, with the first one located at the Suzhou Singapore Industrial Park in 1993.
China’s medium-voltage distribution network is currently at 10kV. With the rapid economic development, the current 10kV distribution system sees an increasingly conspicuous problem of small capacity and big power loss, especially in economically developed areas This situation makes the skyrocketing electricity load a large burden. Compared with the traditional 10kV distribution network, the 20KV distribution network not only increases power supply capacity, but also reduces power loss by 75% and is also environmentally friendly. Calculations have shown that nonferrous metal consumption of 20kV power supply wires can be reduced by 50% and about 40% of capital investment can be saved when transmitting the same amount of power.
“ABB is very pleased to participate in China’s 20kV power supply project construction once again.” says Bernd Muehe, Senior Vice President of ABB China and head of Power Product Division. “ABB’s advanced power equipment features high reliability, increasing efficiency and energy saving, which can enable the domestic distribution networks to be more efficient, energy-saving and rationally deployed.”
Now, many countries and regions in the world have taken the 20-kilovoltage grade as standard voltage for medium-voltage distribution networks and it has been listed as the standard of the International Electrotechnical Commission, boasting very mature technique and experience.
Along with the construction of Sino-Singapore Industrial Park in Suzhou, China’s first distribution network project using a 20kV complete cable power supply emerged in 1993. Last year, Jiangsu province took a leading role in promoting a 20-kilovoltage grade pilot power supply project in its 13 cities according to the State Grid’s core proposal of “Circular on Promotion of 20kV Voltage Grade”. ABB managed to win this Jingjiang distribution network project through its reliable technical strength and equipment operation experience accumulated in the Singapore Industrial Park project.
Safe series gas insulated RMU products which have won the bid are made by ABB High-voltage Switch Equipment Co., Ltd, Beijing. The entire switch equipment is enclosed in a stainless steel case, free from the outside environment by being, in order to ensure reliable operation and non-maintenance. Ever since the Safe series RMU was introduced into the Chinese market in 2001 by ABB, it has been widely used in South to North Water Diversion project, rural power grids and Beijing Chang’An road reconstruction projects among many other projects.
Founded in 1996, ABB High-voltage Switch Equipment Co., Ltd, Beijing mainly involves the designing, manufacturing and marketing of advanced high- and medium-voltage switchgear equipment and has now become one of MV switchgear and breaker manufacturers with the biggest sales in China.
