Engineering students get excited about ABB technology at WFES2010

2010-01-20 - The third day of the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE saw hundreds of high school and college students from across the country visiting ABB's stand to learn more about technologies for building a better world. During the day ABB experts shared their knowledge especially on solutions for energy efficiency in power plants and clean transport.

A number of students who visited the exhibition showed a lot of interest in ABB's industrial robot, the IRB 140, which was on display. The students were given more information about the robots currently being used in the manufacturing and oil industries by Ramesh Jain, local business unit manager for Robotics in the Gulf.

Additionally, engineering students from the Canadian University and Al Ain Engineering College showed their eagerness to know more about ABB's SciSat1 Carbon Management Model. The SciSat1 is currently being used in satellites launched by Canadian and Japanese space agencies to monitor the weather changes, ozone layer depletion and also detect carbon emissions from an altitude of about 650kms from the earth's surface.

Sharing clean transport and energy efficiency expertise

Meanwhile at the WFES conference, Bjorn Lager, ABB's global product manager for switches and electrical charging units, presented on sustainable transport and e-mobility within a smart grid.

During the day's exhibitor seminars, Albert Bossart, head of sales for Waste to Energy (WtE), made a presentation on 'Think of the life cycle in a WtE power plant'.

Bossart addressed key energy issues within today's power plants: "One of the key ways to save energy in any given process is by using the right equipment that consumes less energy and requires less maintenance. Another way is to ensure that the engineers are using an integrated system engineering approach. Finally, customers should prefer variable frequency drives instead of conventional regulators (such as valves and dampers) in their power plants as these help reduce energy consumption by 10-15%."

ABB stand attracts high-profile visitors

Following His Royal Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan's visit at ABB's stand the day before, ABB representatives also interacted with high-level Indian officials, including dignitaries such as India's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Talmiz Ahmed and the former Indian Union Minister for Industries, Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
