Beijing, China, March 30, 2005 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, today awarded five scholarships to graduates from Chinese universities and researchers from its laboratories.
"These scholars will go to our corporate research centers in Poland, Germany and Sweden and the Northern Institute of Technology in Hamburg, Germany," said Dr. Christian Rehtanz, vice president and director of Corporate Research for ABB in China. "The intention is to strengthen the cooperation between the excellent Chinese universities and ABB Corporate Research in the fields of Power Systems, Manufacturing Technologies and Robotics."
Rehtanz made the announcement at the official opening of ABB’s new corporate research center in Beijing. He said:
- for Manufacturing Technologies: Dr. Ben ZHAO, Tsinghua University, Beijing will spend two years with ABB’s Corporate Research Center in Poland
- for Robotics: M.Sc. GAO Yang, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin will spend two years with ABB’s Corporate Research Center in Germany
- for Power Systems: Dr. ZHANG Chunpeng, Tsinghua University, Beijing will spend six months with ABB’s Corporate Research Center in Sweden
- M.Sc. Clement Yongzhi HUANG, ABB Corporate Research China, receives the ABB scholarship for the Global Engineering Double Degree Program at the Northern Institute of Technology in Germany
- M.Sc. Kevin Peng KONG, ABB Corporate Research China, receives the ABB scholarship for the Global Engineering Double Degree Program at the Northern Institute of Technology in Germany
ABB in China’s chairman and president, Peter Leupp, framed the opening of the center and the scholarships in the context of the company’s 5-point plan for profitable growth in China. The plan, announced in October 2004, includes average growth of 20 percent per year, new investments of at least $100 million, cost migration, the new research center and hiring 5,000 new employees, all in the run-up to 2008.
