ABB shares ideas on smart city development in Chongqing

Report presented at the Chongqing Mayor’s 8th International Economic Advisory Council forum throws light on how smart energy solutions can support urbanization

Bernhard Jucker, Head of Power Products division and Executive Vice President of ABB
Chongqing, China, September 22, 2013 – Bernhard Jucker, Head of Power Products division and Executive Vice President of ABB, a leading power and automation technology group, shared his insights on ‘smart’ city development at the Chongqing Mayor’s 8th International Economic Advisory Council forum with a report entitled A global perspective: Intelligent power solutions for the next generation of cities.

“Urbanization is a global megatrend that is transforming societies,” said Jucker at the forum, which focused on Opportunities and Challenges of urban development. “The integration of smart technologies in infrastructure development presents an opportunity for Chongqing to continue on its impressive growth path and at the same time create a strong foundation for a sustainable urban future.”

In his report, Jucker presented a number of projects from around the world deploying ‘smart’ solutions. In the Kalasatama quarter of Finland’s capital, Helsinki, a smart grid solution helps integrate renewables and distributed power generation sources while ensuring a stable, reliable, efficient and environmentally sustainable power system. He references Estonia as the first country to launch a nationwide fast-charging network for electric vehicles. The report also talks of Sweden’s Port Ystad, where a shore-to-ship power solution allows ships to shut off their diesel engines and plug into an onshore power source while docked, thus cutting both emissions and noise. According to preliminary estimates, the electrified port will cut emissions by as much as 97.5 percent. He also talks of several landmark buildings in Singapore where energy consumption has been significantly reduced through the use of intelligent building technology.
