Becomes the largest GIS manufacturer in China with the launch of best-in-class automatic production line
Beijing, December 27, 2011 –ABB, a top 500 company, recently announced the successful delivery of its 10,000th medium voltage gas insulation switchgear (GIS) by ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company. At the same time, the company launched an advanced automatic GIS production line, meaning ABB has the largest MV GIS production capacity in China.
Bernd Muehe, Head of the Power Products Division, North Asia Region and China, said: “ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company is our first local JV in China. It has continually been a significant part of our commitment to localization and the introduction of our leading technologies. The 10,000th MV GIS and the new production line are the latest milestones for the plant, and embody our ‘in China, for China and the world’ corporate strategy.”
ABB is the global MV GIS leader, boasting a leading position in terms of technology and market share. ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company is one of the largest MV switchgear and breaker manufacturers in the world. The new production line will increase the annual GIS production capacity of the plant to 8,000 units.
The newly built MV GIS automatic assembly line was independently developed by ABB engineers in Xiamen to meet the demands of the local working environment. The production line adopts roller and track lines to ensure the automatic operation of the entire line and replaces the previous manual operation and mechanical handling. The new line reaches the highest automation level in China’s switchgear industry and is highly compatible to support the production of different product models on the same platform. In addition, the new line has the check and test functionality to conduct final product online testing directly during the production process. With the adoption of the new line, the company can shorten its project delivery time to 2 months, top in the industry.
In 2003, ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company rolled out the 1st locally produced MV GIS in China. To date, its products have been widely adopted by a variety of industries, including the high-speed railway, subway, airport, port, petrochemical, power generation, substation, metal, and manufacturing industries. They have also been deployed in key state projects, including the Shenzhen metro, Guangzhou metro, Shanghai metro, Tianjin metro, Wuhan metro and most of the high speed railway project such as JingHu, HuNing, HuHang, WuGuang, ZhengXi, WenFu, FuXia, JingShiWu, etc. The products are also exported to overseas markets such as Korea, Malaysia, and Australia.
ABB MV GIS equipment is used to take and distribute electric power in the power supply and distribution systems, and control, protect, and monitor electric circuits. The devices are designed with a modular and integrated approach to lower the deployment cost, and connect a variety of electric devices seamlessly with their digital control protection technology, sensor systems, and plug-in connections.
Established in 1992, ABB Xiamen Switchgear Company enjoys robust momentum thanks to its localization and technology introduction. The company has been ranked among the “China Top 10 Electric Companies” for 11 consecutive years, and maintains a leading position in the sector globally. Xiamen is also the home of the ABB Medium Voltage Technology Center. The facility was established in 2002 and is committed to R&D for all ABB MV business including GIS, developing leading technology to address local customer demands.
