ABB supplies pre-fabricated mobile substation to the domestic market for first time

Chongqing, January 25, 2013 -- ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced that it won a bid for Chongqing Electric Power Corporation’s 110kV emergency mobile intelligent substation construction project at the end of last year and will provide a complete set of pre-fabricated mobile substations. This is the first time for ABB to supply a pre-fabricated mobile substation in China, and also the first time that Chongqing Electric Power Corporation has purchased a 110kV pre-fabricated mobile substation.

Modular production is adopted in the manufacturing of pre-fabricated mobile substations and mobility is realized through vehicle-mounting. The substation features a compact structure, easy transportation, complete equipment, flexibility, reliability, and convenient maintenance. At the same time, it can reduce the necessary investment in a variety of areas, such as land expropriation, construction, and equipment installation. The pre-fabricated substation can be used for applications such as urban public power distribution, residential areas, industrial and mining enterprises, and construction sites, and can satisfy emergency power supply needs in the event of accident or natural disaster. It can also serve as a backup during a temporary equipment outage caused by the technical renovation of the substation in the grid. Due to the rapid growth of China’s economy, the dramatic increase of power consumption and the continuously increasing demand for power reliability, market demand for pre-fabricated mobile substations is growing.

Chongqing Electric Power Corporation is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation of China, with the investment, construction, and operation of the power grid as its core businesses. Its power supply covers 96% of Chongqing, meeting the power needs of 30 million people. In December last year, State Grid launched a demonstration project of new generation intelligent substations and identified Chongqing Electric Power Corporation as one of the companies to carry out the demonstration project. This procurement of a pre-fabricated mobile substation is one part of the demonstration project for Chongqing Electric. ABB won this order based upon its complete value chain, premier product performance, and localized design, and will provide a full solution, including products, design, engineering, and services. The mobile substation is expected to be delivered within the year.

As a global leader in power technologies, ABB has always adhered to its “in China, for China” strategy, actively satisfying the growth needs of China’s electricity market with complete transmission and distribution products developed through local R&D and production. At the end of last year, ABB led “China’s Top 100 Electric Companies 2012” for the 9th consecutive year with 10 of its local companies on the list, fully demonstrating ABB’s overall strength in the power industry.

ABB ( is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 145,000 people. ABB has a full range of business activities in China, including R&D, manufacturing, sales and services, with 18,300 employees, 36 local companies, and an extensive sales and service network across 80 cities.
