ABB launches locally-developed drive product and expands capacity in China

  • Launch locally developed medium-voltage drive ACS580MV to better serve customers
  • Phase IV expansion project of ABB Beijing Drives Factory was completed, further expanding its production capacity and improving its service levels

  • Beijing, Sept. 25, 2014 - On the 20th anniversary celebration of ABB Beijing Drive Systems Co., Ltd. ("ABB Beijing Drives" for short), the world’s leading power and automation technology group ABB launched its first locally developed medium-voltage drive product called ACS580MV and announced that the Phase IV expansion project of ABB Beijing Drives was officially completed, thus improving the Group’s drive product portfolio and services to better meet the growing demand for energy-efficient products in the Chinese market.

As an all-compatible ABB general-purpose drive tailored for the Chinese market, ACS580MV has fully taken into account China’s national standards and specific requirements from the voltage level to protection design, in order to ensure that the drive can work normally in a variety of complex, harsh working environments in China. Its user-friendly operation interface and modular design allow customers to quickly become familiar with the device and to operate and maintain it.

At the same time, ABB has further expanded the scale of ABB Beijing Drives in order to meet the growing demand for services for existing installed capacity, which is already huge and growing every day. The newly completed Phase IV factory has an area of 6,500 square meters and is mainly used for the service, repair and maintenance of drive systems, the production, operation and logistics center for spare parts as well as customer and technology training. It will be integrated with the 150 authorized nationwide service stations of ABB drives business to provide customers with comprehensive, efficient and high-quality services.

Pauli Järvinen, head of ABB Discrete Automation and Motion Division, North Asia and China, said: “We are proud of ABB Beijing Drives' successful development in China over the past 20 years, as well as its successful factory expansion. Sticking to our 'In China, for China and the world' strategy, we will spare no efforts in developing and providing energy efficient products, technologies and services that promote the sustainable, green development of Chinese economy. This is our long-term commitment to China."

Drives have a huge potential for energy-saving in the industrial sector. By controlling the speed and torque of motors, drives can usually save energy by 30% -50%, thereby significantly improving industrial energy efficiency. The development and promotion of the drive technology have important significance in China's industrial upgrading and sustainable development.

As early as 1994, ABB started to introduce advanced drive products and technologies into China, helping Chinese enterprises to improve their productivity and achieve their energy-saving goals. After 20 years of rapid development, as ABB’s only company providing industrial drive products and services in China, ABB Beijing Drive Systems Co., Ltd. has grown into the largest drive manufacturer in China and has been ranked among "Top 100 Enterprise of China’s Electric Industry" for 11 years in a row.

As of today, ABB has cumulatively sold 3 million drives in China. These products have been widely used in the country’s key construction projects, such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, Beijing Olympics stadium and the Dianchi Lake Water Supply project. The drive products manufactured by ABB Beijing Drives have also been exported to Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and other countries. ABB drives installed in China have cumulatively saved about 201 billion kWh of electricity for Chinese customers, which is equivalent to more than two years of the total electricity consumption of Beijing.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility, industry, and transport and infrastructure customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 145,000 people. ABB has a full range of business activities in China, including R&D, manufacturing, sales and services, with 19,000 employees, 37 local companies, and an extensive sales and service network across 109 cities.
