ABB helps the world’s largest newsprint paper production base save 5 million RMB on annual electricity spending
ABB advanced automation technology enables the precision control of the most sophisticated paper machine drive system in the world
Beijing, April 29, 2011 –ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, recently commissioned the advanced automation control system for Huatai Paper’s high-end coated paper machine with an annual capacity of 700,000 tons. The tailored automation system from ABB gives the paper maker millisecond-level precision control over the world’s most complex drive system in the paper industry, cutting power consumption and production costs to a remarkable degree. ABB solution will help Huatai Paper save 5 million RMB on annual electricity spending, equivalent to saving 3700 tons of standard coal a year.
Joachim Braun, Head of the Process Automation Division, North Asia Region and China, said, “Shandong Huatai Group is a leader in the global paper making industry. We are glad to provide tailored services to China’s top-end paper machine projects, helping customers effectively raise energy efficiency and achieve eco-friendly production.”
ABB delivered its PMC800 multi-drive control system for Huatai’s high-grade coated paper production line with an annual output of 700,000 tons. As one of the paper industry’s most sophisticated drive systems, it comprises 223 driving parts, 241 AC variable frequency motors, 10 AC800M controllers and other equipment, providing AC drive and control functions for every element of the paper production line including paper machine, rewinder, off-machine coater, super calendar and winder.
The production has a great number of tension control points and coater machine runs at a maximum speed of 2100 meters/min, requiring very precise control when the speed of the production line varies. ABB’s advanced automation system enables millisecond-level precision control over the drive equipment, ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the paper line.
To further cut energy consumption in production, ABB has specially developed high-performance motors to install in the winder, rewinder, super calendar and coater on the line. With 3.8% greater efficiency than before, ABB motors alone help the paper maker cut annual power consumption cost by around 5 million RMB.
ABB and Huatai Corporation have maintained long-term relationships on numerous projects since 2000. To date, ABB has delivered a variety of products and engineering services, including robotics, automation systems, chemical delivery, and electric devices covering motors, drives, transformers and switchgears.
ABB is committed to developing energy efficient technology for the pulp and paper industry and helping customers to improve energy performance, while minimizing their environmental impacts. At the end of 2010, ABB further strengthened its foothold in China with the inauguration of ABB’s only Quality Control Systems (QCS) and Web Imaging Systems (WIS) manufacturing base worldwide in Shanghai. The move allows ABB to promptly respond to both Asia and the global customer demands for leading products and services.
To date, ABB has established long-term strategic partnerships and provided comprehensive automation solutions to Huatai Paper, Sun Paper, Lee & Man Paper, APP, Hengan Paper, Nine Dragons Paper, Shanying Paper, and other leading paper companies. ABB technology helps customers improve productively and energy efficiency.
